Wu Lei (吴磊, also known as Leo Wu), born on 26 December 1999 in Shanghai, China, is a Chinese actor primarily active in film and television in mainland China. He achieved the highest national score in the acting major entrance examination of the Beijing Film Academy and has since taken leading roles in major productions such as Battle Through the Heavens, The Long Ballad, Love Like the Galaxy, and Amidst a Snowstorm of Love.

Early Life

Wu Lei grew up in Shanghai and spent part of his childhood living in Chengdu, Sichuan. His family consists of his parents and an older sister. He began appearing in commercials at the age of three and later started acting in children’s television series. In 2018, he was admitted to the Beijing Film Academy with the highest national score in the acting specialty.

Career

Wu Lei began his artistic activities in 2002 through appearances in television commercials. In 2007, he officially debuted as a child actor in the fantasy television series The Legend of the Gods: Fengming Qishan.

Between 2006 and 2012, he appeared in numerous television productions, including The Young Warriors of the Yang Clan (2006), and portrayed Nezha in The Legend of the Gods: Fengming Qishan (2007). In 2009, he received the “Outstanding Child Actor” award at the Flying Apsaras Awards for his role in the sitcom Alien Family. He later appeared in The Mischievous Boy Ma Xiaotiao (2010) and Mo’s Mischief (2012).

In 2014, Wu Lei played the younger version of Yang Guo in The Return of the Condor Heroes, marking a transition toward youth-oriented historical dramas. In 2015, he appeared in the web drama Chinese Paladin Inn, the sports-themed drama Whirlwind Girl, and the political historical drama Nirvana in Fire.

From 2017, Wu Lei began taking on leading roles in large-scale projects, including the web series Fighter of the Destiny: The Brightest Youth. He also made his international film debut with the Sino-British action film S.M.A.R.T. Chase and the New Zealand–China co-production Into the Rainbow.

In 2018, he starred in Battle Through the Heavens, adapted from the web novel of the same name, and appeared in the film Shadow directed by Zhang Yimou. In the same year, he participated in Tomb of the Sea and Asura.

In 2019, he appeared in the romantic film Adoring. In 2020, Wu Lei starred in The Promise of Chang’an and Cross Fire, an eSports-themed drama, expanding his work into youth and sports genres.

In 2021, he played the male lead in the historical drama The Long Ballad and appeared in the film My Country, My Parents, directed by Wu Jing. In the same year, he starred in the film Upcoming Summer.

In 2022, Wu Lei portrayed Ling Buyi in Love Like the Galaxy, one of the most successful historical dramas of the year. He also participated in modern projects such as Nothing but You and appeared in two art films, Dwelling by the West Lake and All Ears. At the Sino–American Television Festival, he received the award for “Outstanding Young Actor of the Year.”

In 2024, Wu Lei starred in Amidst a Snowstorm of Love, playing a professional snooker player. According to media reports, he underwent intensive training to perform the competition scenes.

In 2025, he returned to the big screen with the World War II–themed film Dongji Island, portraying a fisherman. In the same year, he received the “Most Influential Television Actor” award at Tencent’s Starlight Awards and the “Breakthrough Actor” award at the China Television Festival.
