Park Shin-hye is a South Korean actress, singer, and model, born on February 18, 1990, in Gwangju, South Korea. She has been active in South Korean film and television since 2003.
Early life
Park Shin-hye was born and raised in Gwangju in a family consisting of her father Park Hyeon-jong, a chef, her mother Jo Mi-sook, and her older brother Park Shin-won, born in 1988. The family later relocated to Songpa District, Seoul.
While attending sixth grade at Hak-Kang Elementary School in Gwangju, she was encouraged by an English teacher at a private academy to audition for Dream Factory, a music company founded by singer Lee Seung-hwan. An older photograph was submitted for the initial screening. After passing the preliminary stage, she traveled to Seoul for an in-person evaluation and was accepted as a trainee by Lee Seung-hwan at Dream Factory.
In 2001, she moved to Seoul with her family and began formal training in vocal performance, dance, and acting at Dream Factory. During this period, she appeared in Lee Seung-hwan’s music videos, including “Do You Love Me!” (2001) and “Flower” (2003). She later studied theater at Chung-Ang University.
Career
Park Shin-hye began her acting career in 2003, portraying the younger version of a character played by Choi Ji-woo in the television drama Stairway to Heaven.
In 2004, she appeared in the special program Very Merry Christmas, playing a rebellious teenager. In 2005, she acted in the television series The New Dad Is Twenty-Nine as Song Dae-in and appeared in the drama Cute or Crazy.
In 2006, she took on her first adult leading role in the Korean–Japanese melodrama Tree of Heaven, which was later broadcast in Japan. In the same year, she co-hosted the variety program Fantastic Partner with singer Yoon Gun and participated in writing the song “I Think of You.”
In 2007, she made her film debut in the horror film Evil Twin, in which she played dual roles. That year, she also appeared in television productions including Prince Hours (a spin-off of Princess Hours), Several Questions That Make Us Happy, and the weekend drama Kimcheed Radish Cubes as Jang Sa-ya.
In 2008, she received the Best Newcomer award in the variety show category at the MBC Entertainment Awards. In 2009, she starred as a female lead disguised as a male character in the romantic musical comedy series You’re Beautiful and contributed two songs to its original soundtrack.
In 2010, she starred in the film Cyrano Agency, which sold approximately 2.7 million tickets nationwide. The same year, she provided the voice for the lead character in the animated film Green Days: Dinosaur and I, which premiered at the 15th Busan International Film Festival.
In 2011, she played a leading role in the television drama Heartstrings. In September of that year, she signed an exclusive contract with the Japanese management company IMX. She also appeared in the Taiwanese television series Hayate the Combat Butler, adapted from the manga of the same name.
In 2012, she starred in Don’t Worry, I’m a Ghost, part of the KBS Drama Special series, and received the Best Actress award in the short drama category at the KBS Drama Awards.
In 2013, she appeared in the film Miracle in Cell No. 7, earning the Best Supporting Actress award at the 33rd Korean Association of Film Critics Awards. During the same year, she held an Asia tour titled 2013 Park Shin Hye Asia Tour: Kiss of Angel, starred in the television series Flower Boys Next Door, and participated in its soundtrack. She also appeared in the television drama The Heirs. In addition, she received the Popular Foreign Actress award at the Anhui TV Drama Awards.
In 2014, she portrayed a queen in the historical film The Royal Tailor. That year, she also starred in the television drama Pinocchio. She was ranked 33rd on the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity 40 list and received the Prime Minister’s Commendation at the Korea Popular Culture Awards.
