Yang Mi (Chinese: 杨幂; born September 12, 1986) is a Chinese actress, singer, and television producer. She graduated from the Performance Department of the Beijing Film Academy and primarily works in film and television.

Yang Mi is a co-founder of Jaywalk Studio, where she assisted in the discovery and development of young actors such as Dilraba Dilmurat.

Early life

Yang Mi was born in Xuanwu District, Beijing, to a police officer father and a homemaker mother. Her given name, “Mi” (幂), was chosen because it is the mathematical term for exponentiation (the power of three), symbolizing that all three family members share the surname Yang.

Yang Mi attended the Xuanwu Experimental Primary School before being admitted to the Beijing Film Academy.

Career

Yang Mi began her acting career in 1990 at the age of four with a role in the historical television series Tang Ming Huang.

In 1992, she appeared in the film King of Beggars alongside Stephen Chow. After a hiatus to focus on her education, Yang Mi returned to the entertainment industry in 2001 as a commercial model.

In 2002, she signed with Rosat Entertainment and made her professional comeback in 2003 in the television series The Story of a Noble Family.

From 2006 to 2008, Yang Mi gained recognition through roles in wuxia and fantasy productions. Her performances in The Return of the Condor Heroes (2006) and Wang Zhaojun (2007) earned her nominations at the China TV Golden Eagle Awards.

In 2009, her role in Chinese Paladin 3 increased her popularity among younger audiences.

In 2010, Yang Mi appeared in The Dream of Red Mansions and Beauty’s Rival in Palace, demonstrating her range in both period dramas and commercial productions.

In 2011, Yang Mi’s career experienced significant growth. Her lead role in the time-travel series Palace brought widespread recognition and an award at the Shanghai Television Festival. The same year, she starred in the film Mysterious Island, which became the highest-grossing horror film in China at the time of its release.

In 2012, her role in Beijing Love Story earned her the Most Popular Actress award at the China TV Golden Eagle Art Festival.

In 2013, Yang Mi expanded into the film industry with the Tiny Times series, which achieved high box office results despite mixed critical reception. She also produced the web series V Love.

In 2014, she starred in The Breakup Guru, one of the year’s highest-grossing films, and the fantasy series Swords of Legends, which led in online viewership in China.

In 2015, Yang Mi participated in the projects You Are My Sunshine, Fall in Love Like a Star, and The Witness.

In 2016, the series The Interpreter achieved the highest television ratings of the year.

In 2017, she starred in Eternal Love, which recorded high viewership across multiple markets. In the same year, she appeared in the science fiction film Reset, produced by Jackie Chan, and won the Best Actress award at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival.

In 2021, Yang Mi portrayed An Jing, a police officer, in the cyber-security drama Storm Eye, which aired on Dragon TV and Zhejiang TV. She also starred in the historical series Novoland: Pearl Eclipse. In film, she played Tu Ling in the fantasy action movie A Writer’s Odyssey.

In 2022, Yang Mi played a surgeon in the medical drama Thank You Doctor alongside Bai Yu. She also starred in the television series She and Her Perfect Husband and had a supporting role in the film New Year Express.

On May 10, 2023, Yang Mi officially announced her departure from the management company Jiaxing Media (Jaywalk) and established her own independent studio, Shanghai Yangmi Film and Television Culture Studio. In the same year, she starred as Yao Ji in the film Nothing Can’t Be Undone by a Hotpot.

In 2024, Yang Mi starred as Guan Xue in the spy drama In the Name of the Brother (Harbin 1944) alongside Qin Hao. The series was nominated for Best Series Drama at the Seoul International Drama Awards. She also held supporting roles in two films: She’s Got No Name as Wang Zimei and The Lychee Road.

In 2025, Yang Mi starred in the television series This Thriving Land, which received a 9.8/10 rating on iQIYI. In April 2025, she was announced as a lead in the film Silent Awakening, directed by Zhang Yimou.
