Yao Xiaotang (Chinese: 姚晓棠; born September 11, 1998) is a Chinese singer and actress. Born in Heyuan, Guangdong Province, Yao is active in both music and acting. Yao graduated from the Central Academy of Drama, majoring in Musical Theatre.

Early life

Yao was born in Haifeng County, Guangdong Province, in 1998. Yao showed interest in singing and dancing from childhood. At age eight, Yao began systematic professional training in singing, hosting, piano, and dance, and subsequently won first place in several vocal competitions.

In 2016, following graduation from the Middle School Attached to the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, Yao was admitted to the Central Academy of Drama to study musical theatre performance. During this period, Yao played the lead role in the Chinese version of the Broadway musical In the Heights.

Career

In 2020, Yao began a music career with the release of the singles “If the Clouds Fly Away” (假如云飞去) and “See You Again” (再会有期).

In 2021, Yao participated in the sixth season of the talent competition Sing! China, joining Wang Feng’s team and finishing in fourth place nationally.

In 2022, Yao debuted as an actress in the lead role of the detective comedy film Mr. No Problem (奇妙能力哥), which premiered on Tencent Video in September.

In 2023, Yao released the debut EP Solitude Disorder (独处症), consisting of four tracks: “Powerless” (无能为力), “I Miss You” (我想你了), “Artificial” (人为), and “Her Tree” (她的树). That same year, Yao appeared as a regular guest on the fourth season of the music program The Treasured Voice.

In 2024, Yao appeared in the fifth season of The Treasured Voice. In acting, Yao was cast in the historical film Dream of the Red Chamber: The Bond of Gold and Jade (红楼梦之金玉良缘) as Jia Tanchun. Yao also performed the song “Double Dreams” (双梦) for the television series The Princess Royal. In September, Yao performed the song “I Know” (我知道) on the program Next Stop Singer.

In 2025, Yao participated in several artistic events. In January, Yao performed “Spring Red Packet” (春意红包) at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. In February, Yao appeared in the Lantern Festival Gala, performing “We Paint China” (我们绘中国) alongside Yang Hongji, Wang Kai, and other artists. In July, during the sixth season of The Treasured Voice, Yao performed a duet of the song “Courage” (勇气) with Wang Zhengliang.
