i-dle is a multinational South Korean girl group formed by Cube Entertainment in 2018. The group debuted on May 2, 2018, with the mini-album “I am”. The current lineup consists of five members: Miyeon (South Korea), Minnie (Thailand), Soyeon (South Korea), Yuqi (China), and Shuhua (Taiwan).

Meaning of Name
The original name, “(G)I-DLE”, was conceived by Soyeon from the word “Idle” (아이들, meaning “children”), with “(G)” standing for “Girl,” “I” for an individual, and “dle” being the Korean plural form. On May 2, 2025, the group rebranded to “i-dle” to remove the gendered element and move toward a more modern and flexible image.
Fandom & Lightstick
The group’s fandom name is “Neverland”. The meaning of the fandom name is derived from the story of Peter Pan, expressing the wish for i-dle and their fans to be able to “live forever” like in Neverland. The name is also related to the group’s Korean name, which contains the word for “children,” symbolizing being “forever children in Neverland.”
The group’s official lightstick is called the “Neverbong”, first released on November 30, 2019. The lightstick design includes the fandom name “Neverland” on the product. The second version of the Neverbong was announced and released in June 2023.
Popularity
i-dle is highly popular in Asia, particularly in the Chinese market, where they are the best-selling girl group. The group also holds significant influence in Thailand, having changed the concert venue from an arena to a stadium due to high demand. In Japan, the group debuted on July 31, 2019.
i-dle’s official YouTube channel has approximately 9.3 million subscribers with over 6.7 billion views as of June 2025. The group reached 100 million monthly listeners on YouTube Music, becoming the 4th-generation group with the highest monthly audience. The music videos for “Tomboy” and “Queencard” both surpassed 300 million views in 2024. The “Queencard” MV achieved 100 million views in only about 18 days after release. As of 2025, the group has nine music videos that have surpassed 100 million views.
The group appeals to a young audience with their bold music and concepts, addressing social and gender issues through their art. Their second full-length album, “2”, released in January 2024, sold over 1.3 million copies.
i-dle was hailed as “Monster Rookies” after achieving six music show wins and collecting 12 year-end awards in their debut year. In 2022, the group participated in the Music Bank World Tour in Chile as part of the global Hallyu promotion tour. The group is known for self-producing most of their tracks, which is a rare feat for K-pop girl groups.
An interesting point is that each member has a distinct vocal color, and Soyeon, in her role as the main producer, writes individual parts for each member based on their voices and strengths rather than making them sound similar. Not only Soyeon but also Minnie and Yuqi are regularly credited in the B-side tracks for each comeback.
In 2024, all five members decided to renew their contracts with Cube Entertainment, which was announced at the Melon Music Awards in November 2024.

Music style
i-dle stands out for its self-produced music, which is uncommon among major K-pop girl groups. Leader Soyeon serves as the main composer, arranger, and producer, constantly reinventing the group’s image with each album. Other members like Minnie and Yuqi also frequently participate in composing B-side tracks.
In terms of concept, i-dle is known for constantly changing with every comeback, from the traditional sound of “LATATA”, the gothic style of “Oh my god”, the summer concept of “DUMDi DUMDi”, the traditional music fusion in “HWAA”, the punk-rock style of “TOMBOY”, the message of natural beauty in “Nxde”, the self-confidence concept of “Queencard”, to the empowerment message in “Super Lady”. The 2022 album “I Never Die” utilized pop-rock sounds, drawing inspiration from alt-rock and punk-rock styles.
(G)I-DLE’s music focuses on themes such as self-confidence, breaking gender stereotypes, and freedom of self-expression. The group often incorporates social and gender elements into their work, creating a distinctive concept within the current generation of K-pop girl groups.
