SEVENTEEN (세븐틴), commonly abbreviated as SVT, is a South Korean boy band managed by Pledis Entertainment, a subsidiary of HYBE Corporation. The group officially debuted on May 26, 2015, with the extended play (EP) 17 Carat. SEVENTEEN consists of thirteen members: eleven South Korean nationals, one Korean-American member, Joshua (born in Los Angeles), and two Chinese members, Jun and The8.

Meaning of Name
The name “SEVENTEEN” does not correspond to the number of members in the group. Instead, the name is derived from the formula “13 members + 3 units + 1 group = 17,” representing how thirteen individuals from three distinct units come together as one group.
The three units include the Hip-Hop Team (S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, and Vernon), the Vocal Team (Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, and Seungkwan), and the Performance Team (Hoshi, Jun, The8, and Dino). Each unit releases its own music while also contributing to group releases.
Fandom & Lightstick
The official fandom name for SEVENTEEN is CARAT (캐럿), derived from the unit of measurement for diamond purity, symbolizing the connection between the group and its supporters. In 2016, on October 6—the group’s 500th day since debut—the official fandom colors were announced as Rose Quartz and Serenity.
The official lightstick is named the Caratbong (캐럿봉), which has seen three iterations. In 2023, on March 3, the Caratbong ver. 3 was released, features a clear globe with a diamond shape inside, representing both the group and fandom names. The handle is inscribed with “SEVENTEEN.” The device requires three AAA batteries and operates in four modes: ON, BLINK, FLICKER, and OFF.
Popularity
The SEVENTEEN fan base is primarily concentrated in East and Southeast Asia, with significant numbers in South Korea, Japan, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. In Japan, the group maintains dedicated activities, including Japanese-language albums and large-scale concert tours. In Latin America, Google search data indicates consistent interest from Brazil and Mexico.
In 2026, by February, the group’s official Instagram account reached over 16.3 million followers, while the official YouTube channel recorded over 11 million subscribers. In 2024, SEVENTEEN accumulated a total of 1.52 billion views on YouTube. Engagement metrics show a balanced distribution of followers across platforms including Instagram, X (Twitter), and YouTube.
In physical music sales, SEVENTEEN became the first artist to surpass 30 million total copies sold on the Hanteo Chart across their entire discography. In 2020, the group recorded the highest revenue for a non-Asian tour among South Korean groups, despite the cancellation of the European leg due to COVID-19.

Musical style
SEVENTEEN utilizes genres such as pop, R&B, hip-hop, and dance-pop, with some tracks incorporating band sounds or alternative R&B. A significant portion of the discography is composed and produced by Woozi, the leader of the Vocal Team, with contributions from S.Coups, Hoshi, and Vernon. Choreography is primarily led by Hoshi, characterized by synchronized movements and multi-layered formations for thirteen members.
The concept of “self-producing idols” has been associated with SEVENTEEN since their early career. The group modifies its artistic concept for each release. Face the Sun (2022) utilized a dark and powerful image, FML (2023) focused on urban and mature themes, while Seventeenth Heaven (2023) employed brighter color palettes. Performances typically feature complex formation structures and high levels of synchronization.
