TWICE is a South Korean girl group under JYP Entertainment, debuting on October 20, 2015, through the survival program Sixteen. The show featured 16 trainees competing for 9 debut spots, produced by Park Jin-young (JYP) himself.

Debuting through a reality show gave TWICE an early fanbase even before their official debut, as audiences had followed each member’s journey. This approach differed from many other girl groups at the time, which often revealed their lineups suddenly without prior public exposure.

The group consists of 9 members:

  • Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Jihyo, Dahyun, Chaeyoung (South Korea)
  • Momo, Sana, Mina (Japan)
  • Tzuyu (Taiwan)

In 2015, TWICE stood out as one of the few multinational girl groups, which helped them expand into overseas markets from the start.

Meaning of TWICE

The name “TWICE” means “two times” in English. According to Park Jin-young, the group aims to touch people’s hearts twice: once through the eyes (visuals, choreography, style) and once through the ears (music, vocals).

This concept is evident in their debut songs like Like OOH-AHH and Cheer Up:

  • Bright visual concepts, coordinated outfits, and vibrant colors
  • Catchy pop melodies, memorable choruses, and distinctive dance moves

Compared to groups debuting around the same time, such as BLACKPINK or GFriend, TWICE opted for an approachable, friendly brand image with mainstream pop music and positive visuals. This laid the foundation for a loyal fanbase that has lasted for years.

Fandom & Lightstick

TWICE’s official fandom name is ONCE, meaning: “If you love TWICE once, the group will love you twice as much.” This slogan reinforces the “two times” concept of the group’s name and builds a sense of mutual connection between fans and idols.

The official lightstick is Candy Bong — designed like a swirled candy with TWICE’s signature pink and peach-orange colors. With each version (Candy Bong Z, Candy Bong ∞), the design and features have been upgraded, from color-changing modes to music synchronization via app, creating impressive light effects during concerts. The lightstick serves as both a cheering tool and a symbol of TWICE’s brand at global events.

Popularity

TWICE is highly popular in South Korea, Japan, and across Asia, with a growing fanbase in North America and Europe. Their early success came from catchy K-pop dance-pop hits like Cheer Up, TT, and Likey, blending light EDM and synth-pop with cheerful melodies and simple, memorable lyrics.

One key strength of TWICE is their ability to shift concepts with each era:

  • 2015–2017: Youthful and cute (Like OOH-AHH, TT, Knock Knock)
  • 2018–2019: Elegant and modern (What is Love?, Fancy)
  • 2020: A mix of mature, glamorous, and energetic (I Can’t Stop Me, Set Me Free)
  • 2021: Light Latin vibe in Alcohol-Free and bold Japanese album Perfect World.
  • 2022: Refined and cohesive with mini-album Between 1&2.
  • 2023: Confident, stylish READY TO BE and a global tour.
  • 2024: Multiple releases (With YOU-th, Dive, Strategy) and record at Nissan Stadium.
  • 2025: 10th-anniversary album This Is For, Japanese album Enemy, and 360° world tour.

These transitions have allowed TWICE to keep their existing fans while attracting new audiences, avoiding repetition and stagnation.

Achievements

  • Like OOH-AHH became the first debut MV by a K-pop girl group to reach 100 million YouTube views.
  • TT hit 100 million views at record speed in 2016 and sparked the viral “TT pose” worldwide.
  • TWICE held a concert at Tokyo Dome just three years after debut — one of Asia’s largest stadiums — showcasing their immense popularity in Japan.
  • Multiple songs have topped both the Gaon Digital Chart and the Oricon Chart, solidifying their dominance in Korea and Japan.

These achievements are reflected not only in numerical data but also demonstrate that TWICE is one of the few girl groups to achieve a balance between digital performance and physical album sales in K-pop.
