Asa (full name: Enami Asa) is a Japanese rapper, born in 2006, currently active in South Korea as a member of the girl group BABYMONSTER under YG Entertainment. She serves as the main rapper and is one of the first Japanese members of the company.

Early Life

Asa was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. Her family consists of her parents and a younger sister. Asa’s father is a traditional Japanese Kabuki stage actor with many years of performance experience, while her mother is a former traditional dance instructor. Growing up in an artistic family environment allowed Asa to be exposed to performing arts early on and develop creative thinking from a young age.

Career Highlights

Asa joined YG Entertainment in 2018, at the age of 12, after passing an audition held in Japan. Her five-year trainee period helped her hone her skills in rap, dance, and stage performance within the demanding K-pop training system.

In 2023, Asa was officially introduced as a member of BABYMONSTER through the “Last Evaluation” project — an internal audition program broadcasted on YG Entertainment’s YouTube channel. There, Asa drew attention with her individual rap performance of “RINGA LINGA” by Taeyang — a member of BIGBANG and solo artist under YG Entertainment — showcasing her control over flow and clear Korean pronunciation, despite Japanese being her native language.

On April 1, 2024, Asa officially debuted with BABYMONSTER through the single “SHEESH.” She performed the opening rap verse and the bridge, a performance that was well-received on forums like Theqoo, Pann, and X for her strong, sharp style. Following this, Asa continued to appear on promotional stages on music programs such as Inkigayo and Music Bank, where her live performances were praised for their stability.

Strengths

Asa holds the position of main rapper in BABYMONSTER. In the song “Batter Up” (2023), she performs the opening rap verse with a high-speed fast-rap section. This rap part is arranged at a tempo of 150 BPM, requiring precise rhythm control in dense lyrical lines with minimal breathing spaces. Asa consistently performs this section live and in official recordings.

Beyond rapping, Asa also contributes to lyric writing and arranging rap sections for the group’s cover stages. At the “BABYMONSTER THE FIRST STAGE” concert in Tokyo in June 2024, Asa rearranged the rap verse of BLACKPINK’s “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” into a Japanese version, which received positive feedback from domestic fans.

Asa is fluent in Japanese, Korean, and English. She is also the only member who has received classical vocal training, giving her an advantage in supporting vocal parts.

Challenges

Before debuting, Asa faced criticism regarding her vocal abilities when a practice clip from an internal evaluation session was leaked on social media in May 2023. The clip showed Asa struggling with maintaining rhythm while singing live. Subsequently, BABYMONSTER’s official YouTube channel uploaded a series of Asa’s vocal practice videos throughout June and July 2023.

Additionally, Asa had to confront pressure from being one of the two Japanese members in the group, as some Korean audiences expressed skepticism about her cultural adaptability. These concerns subsided after Asa performed an entire rap verse in Korean during BABYMONSTER’s stage at KCON Japan 2024.

Fashion

Asa’s fashion style combines Japanese streetwear with YG’s signature oversized items. Her casual outfits often include graphic t-shirts, wide-leg cargo pants, and low-top sneakers, embodying a casual street vibe.

In the summer 2025 fashion campaign, Asa and Ruka (BABYMONSTER) became the faces of Japanese brand WEGO. The promotional shoot focused on “Grunge Style” and “Street Style,” featuring denim pieces, bomber jackets, and standout accessories from the Summer Collection 2025.

Additionally, Asa appeared in DAZED Korea’s “New Girl, Girl Edition” issue in collaboration with Dior for the Fall-Winter 2024–2025 season. The stylist chose minimalist outfits in cool tones, emphasizing a youthful, layered aesthetic with a bold personality.
