He was born on October 3, 1997, in Seoul, South Korea, but grew up in Sydney, Australia. As the leader and producer of the K-pop boy group Stray Kids, he officially debuted on March 25, 2018.

Early Life

Bang Chan was born in Seoul as Christopher Chahn Bahng, the eldest of three siblings. His family immigrated to Sydney, Australia, when he was very young, and he grew up there until the age of 13 before returning to South Korea.

Bang Chan attended Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, where he received training in ballet and contemporary dance. He was also a member of the school choir and studied classical piano from the age of five.

Career

Bang Chan’s career began in 2010 when he auditioned for JYP Entertainment’s global audition in Australia at the age of 13. Following this, he officially joined the company on April 11, 2011. During his almost seven-year trainee period, Bang Chan underwent internal training in vocals, dance, lyric writing, and sound programming.

In 2016, Bang Chan formed the production team 3RACHA with Han and Changbin. The trio began producing and releasing self-composed mixtapes on SoundCloud.

In 2017, JYP Entertainment launched the reality survival show “Stray Kids.” In this project, Bang Chan was given the authority to assemble the performance lineup and participate in the group’s musical direction.

On March 25, 2018, Bang Chan officially debuted with Stray Kids through the mini-album I Am NOT and its title track “District 9”. In the debut lineup, Bang Chan took on the roles of leader, vocalist, rapper, dancer, and a key member of the production unit 3RACHA.

From 2019 to 2021, Bang Chan participated in the production for the album series Clé, Go Live, and Noeasy. During this time, Stray Kids expanded their activities into the international market, meaning a continuous increase in production volume. Bang Chan undertook the majority of the process, including lyric writing, demo creation, and basic production for many tracks on each album.

In March 2022, Stray Kids released the mini-album Oddinary with the title track “MANIAC.” Seven months later, in October, the group released Maxident featuring “CASE 143.” Bang Chan handled the majority of production work for both albums while maintaining his weekly livestream series “Chan’s Room,” where he shared remixes and covers.

In June 2023, Stray Kids released 5-Star, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Bang Chan contributed to songwriting and production across the album. The group released Rock-Star in November.

In July 2024, Stray Kids released the mini-album ATE. Bang Chan continued as the primary producer for both title tracks and B-sides.

In 2025, Bang Chan’s catalog at the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) reached approximately 227 songs, including officially released music, 3RACHA mixtapes, and other support projects.
