Chaeyoung (real name: Son Chae-young, Korean: 손채영), born on April 23, 1999, in Dunchon-dong, Gangdong District, Seoul, South Korea, is a South Korean singer, rapper, and songwriter. She is a member of the K-pop girl group TWICE under JYP Entertainment, serving as the main rapper and sub-vocalist.

Early life

Chaeyoung grew up in Seoul with her parents and her younger brother, Son Jeong-hoon. From an early age, she showed an interest in performing arts and worked as a model for a children’s magazine. Before starting her idol career, she took dance lessons for more than a year. At the age of 13, she auditioned for JYP Entertainment and officially became a trainee in June 2012.

Chaeyoung attended Hanlim Multi Art School and graduated in February 2019 alongside TWICE member Tzuyu.

Career Highlights

Chaeyoung joined JYP Entertainment in 2012 after successfully passing the company’s audition. She became a trainee and later officially debuted with TWICE on October 20, 2015, through the single “Like Ooh-Ahh.” This marked her debut as TWICE’s main rapper and the beginning of her professional career in the entertainment industry.

From the start, Chaeyoung stood out with her powerful rap delivery and unique style. Tracks like “Cheer Up” (2016), “TT” (2016), and “Fancy” (2019) have showcased her talent and contributions to the group’s musical success.

Alongside group activities, Chaeyoung has also ventured into solo projects. She released several solo music videos, including Lalala (2020), a track that highlights her distinct musical style and creative flair. Additionally, she has made appearances on television shows and earned fans’ affection thanks to her down-to-earth and likable personality.

Strengths

As TWICE’s main rapper, Chaeyoung is known for her steady rap delivery, strong rhythm control, and ability to convey the appropriate mood for each concept. Despite TWICE not being a hip-hop-centered group, Chaeyoung maintains a clear presence in pop and EDM tracks, demonstrating flexibility and technical consistency.

Her rap parts—especially in songs like “Cheer Up” (2016) and “Fancy” (2019)—play a vital role in shaping TWICE’s musical identity, highlighting both her technique and personal charm. Beyond rap, she frequently participates in songwriting for TWICE. Her lyrics often carry a personal touch and reveal a level of creativity that stands out among performance-based idols.

In addition to music, Chaeyoung is also talented in illustration. She often expresses her artistic side through drawing, with a surreal style that reflects emotional depth. Some of her artwork, shared on her personal Instagram, has received praise from fans for its muted color palette and introspective themes.

Chaeyoung also has strong communication skills, particularly in English, which allows her to engage comfortably at international events.

Controversies

In 2019, Chaeyoung faced criticism after posting a self-drawn illustration on Instagram that depicted a person hanging, which evoked themes of violence and suicide. The post drew backlash for its potential impact on young audiences. She later deleted the image and issued a public apology.

In 2023, Chaeyoung was involved in further controversy when she wore a shirt featuring the letter “Q” and the slogan “We Go All” during a broadcast of Music Core, which was believed to reference the American QAnon conspiracy movement. Days later, she posted a photo wearing a shirt with an image of Sid Vicious featuring a tilted swastika, which evoked fascist symbolism. Both images sparked strong public backlash. Chaeyoung deleted the posts and issued apologies. JYP Entertainment also released a statement acknowledging the lack of proper image screening and apologized to the public.

Fashion

Chaeyoung is known for her versatile fashion sense, ranging from streetwear and vintage to high-end designer looks. On stage, she often wears outfits with bold cuts, unique materials, or visually striking details. Off-stage, her style leans toward simplicity—oversized tops, jeans, and accessories with a personal touch.

Since 2023, Chaeyoung has been active in the fashion and beauty industries as a brand ambassador:

  • Etro Japan (2023): Brand ambassador in Japan.
  • CipiCipi (2023): Face of the cosmetics brand.
  • Kissing Heart (2024): Global ambassador for the eyewear and contact lens brand.
  • SUPRA Korea (2024–2025): Representative for the Spring/Summer fashion campaign.
  • Saint Laurent × Harper’s Bazaar (2024): Featured in a magazine photoshoot wearing Saint Laurent.
  • DAZED Korea × NIKE (2025): Appeared on the magazine cover as part of a collaboration with NIKE.

These ventures mark Chaeyoung’s growing presence in the commercial fashion scene.
