Dahyun, whose full name is Kim Dahyun, was born on May 28, 1998, in Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. She is a South Korean singer, born in 1998, currently active as the lead rapper and sub-vocalist of the K-pop girl group TWICE under JYP Entertainment.
Early Life
She attended Hanlim Multi Art School, majoring in Practical Music, and graduated in 2017. She first gained attention for a performance of the “eagle dance” at an elementary school church festival. The video of this performance went viral after her debut and is often cited as an early example of her instinctive and captivating stage presence.
Career
Dahyun joined JYP Entertainment in 2012 through an open audition. During her three years as a trainee, she trained in vocals, rap, and performance alongside Chaeyoung and Tzuyu, who would later also debut with TWICE.
In 2015, Dahyun participated in the survival show SIXTEEN, produced by JYP to determine the final lineup for a new girl group. After passing multiple elimination rounds, she was selected as one of the final members in the last episode, aired on July 7, 2015. On October 20, 2015, Dahyun officially debuted as a member of TWICE with the single “Like OOH-AHH.”
From 2016 to 2020, she served as the sub-rapper in title tracks such as Cheer Up, TT, Likey, What is Love?, Fancy, and Feel Special. Her rap parts typically appear in the middle of the song, acting as a break or transition. In promotional stages, she was often placed near the center to leverage her expressive facial reactions and quick visual reflexes.
Since 2021, as TWICE expanded into the U.S. market with their English single The Feels, Dahyun took on the second rap verse – just before the final chorus. She maintained this role in performances on The Kelly Clarkson Show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and the Ready to Be tour (2023), consistently delivering steady rhythm and presence.
In 2024, Dahyun contributed lyrics for the first time, writing for two songs on the mini album With YOU-th, released in February. The album sold over 1 million copies in its first week (according to Hanteo), making it one of the group’s best-selling releases as of April 2024.
Strengths
Within TWICE’s lineup, Dahyun often handles rap parts during transitional segments – between the verse and chorus or following the bridge. This role has been repeated in many promotions, including Fancy (2019), Set Me Free (2023), and One Spark (2024), solidifying her position as lead rapper.
In addition to rap, she provides background vocals or pre-chorus lines, especially in encore stages without backing tracks. She has shown strong rhythm and pitch control in the songs Feel Special and Scientist (2021).
Dahyun also stands out for her stage responsiveness. In encores like Talk That Talk (2022) and One Spark (2024), she often initiates games, changes the mood, and leads fan interactions – a role recognized in viral fan-cam clips.
She plays the piano and once performed an instrumental version of “Merry-Go-Round of Life” during the TWICELIGHTS concert in Seoul (2019) – one of her few solo, non-vocal performances during a tour.
Besides singing, Dahyun is a versatile artist with acting skills, starring in the lead role in the film You Are the Apple of My Eye (2025) and participating in the TV project Love Me (2024).
Challenges
In 2020, amid political tensions between South Korea and China, Dahyun and several other members did not post Chuseok (Korean Mid-Autumn Festival) greetings on social media, triggering backlash from some international fans, particularly in China. JYP Entertainment did not release an official response, and the criticism subsided within days as no specific controversial action had been taken by the artist.
She also faced minor backlash regarding her attitude during livestreams. In a 2021 V Live broadcast, her facial expressions and low interactivity were perceived by some viewers as stiff or awkward. Fans defended her by citing a packed schedule and possible health issues around that time. The company did not comment publicly, and the issue faded without escalation.
Fashion
Dahyun’s off-stage fashion features neutral tones and relaxed silhouettes. She often wears oversized shirts, wide-leg pants, and small crossbody bags. At airports, she tends to choose monochromatic outfits (white, black, gray), paired with baseball caps or round glasses.
On stage, she wears short, fitted designs with sharp cuts – primarily bodysuits, spaghetti strap dresses, and crop tops. Her performance style leans cold-toned, minimalist in accessories and patterns – creating a clear distinction between her public and private image.
Since July 2023, Dahyun has been a global ambassador for Michael Kors. She has participated in various campaigns and attended international fashion events such as New York Fashion Week, also appearing in editorial shoots for Nylon Japan. Previously, she collaborated with Korean cosmetics brands like Espoir and Clio in magazine spreads during 2022–2023.
