Hwang Hyun-jin (born March 20, 2000), better known by the mononym Hyunjin, is a South Korean singer, rapper, and dancer. He is a member of the boy group Stray Kids under JYP Entertainment, serving as a main dancer, lead rapper, and visual. Hyunjin is also a member of the group’s sub-unit Dance Racha.
Early life
Hwang Hyun-jin was born in Seoul, South Korea, as an only child. At the age of six, he moved to Las Vegas, United States, where he lived under the English name Sam and briefly attended kindergarten before returning to South Korea approximately two years later.
Hyunjin was scouted by a JYP Entertainment representative while shopping with his mother during his third year of middle school. He joined the company without prior training in dance or entertainment. After two years as a trainee, he participated in the Mnet survival reality show Stray Kids in late 2017. Hyunjin officially debuted with Stray Kids on March 25, 2018, with the album I Am Not and its lead single “District 9.”
Career
In late 2017, Hyunjin appeared on the Mnet survival show Stray Kids and contributed to the composition of the track “4419.” Following the group’s official debut in March 2018 with the EP I Am Not, he participated in the release of the EPs I Am Who and I Am You within the same year.
From 2019 to February 2021, Hyunjin served as an MC for the MBC program Show! Music Core. During this period, Stray Kids released the Clé series and achieved their first music show win with “Miroh.” In 2019, he joined the KBS project group Bbangbbangz and made an appearance in the web drama A-Teen 2.
In 2020, Stray Kids released the studio album Go Live and its reissue In Life; Hyunjin co-composed the sub-unit track “Wow.” After a temporary hiatus from February to June 2021, he returned for the release of “Mixtape: Oh.” Later that year, the group released the album Noeasy, which received a million-seller certification; Hyunjin co-composed the track “Red Lights.”
In 2022, Stray Kids released the EPs Oddinary and Maxident, both of which reached number one on the Billboard 200. Hyunjin participated in the Maniac World Tour and released the sub-unit tracks “Muddy Water” and “Taste,” as well as solo songs included in the album SKZ-Replay.
In 2023, he contributed to the Japanese album The Sound and the studio album 5-Star. During this year, Hyunjin was appointed as a global brand ambassador for Versace, featured on a remix of “Rush,” and participated in the release of the EP Rock-Star. At the end of the year, he performed a dance duet with Yeji at the MBC Music Festival.
In 2024, Hyunjin renewed his contract with JYP Entertainment. He participated in the EP Ate and the mixtape Hop, while releasing several solo tracks under the SKZ-Record/Player project. He was also announced as a brand ambassador for Cartier and began the Dominate World Tour.
In 2025, Hyunjin was named an ambassador for Givenchy Beauty. On June 27, he released the collaboration single “Always Love” with d4vd, which peaked at number 64 on the UK Singles Chart.
