Early Life
Jennie is an only child. She attended Cheongdam Elementary School in Seoul, South Korea, before moving to New Zealand. At the age of eight, she traveled with her family to Australia and New Zealand. When her mother asked if she liked New Zealand and wanted to stay, Jennie answered “yes.”
A year later, she was sent to study at Waikowhai Intermediate School in Auckland, living with a local homestay family. She shared her experience of learning a new language in the 2006 MBC documentary English, Must Change to Survive.
Career
During her teenage years, Jennie once dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer. After completing intermediate school, she enrolled at ACG Parnell College. Jennie first learned about K-pop while in New Zealand and was particularly drawn to the music of YG Entertainment. When she was 14, her mother planned to move her to Florida, USA, to continue her studies with hopes she would become a lawyer or teacher. However, Jennie disliked the idea and worried about not being able to pursue work she truly enjoyed if she lived alone abroad.
Jennie began training at YG Entertainment in 2010 after passing an audition, later being publicly introduced as a “new trainee” through cover performances and appearances, including G-Dragon’s That XX music video between 2012–2013.
On August 8, 2016, Jennie debuted with BLACKPINK through the single album Square One, which included “Boombayah” and “Whistle,” taking on the roles of rapper and vocalist in the group.

In 2023, Jennie founded her creative management label, Odd Atelier, for her solo career. In 2024, she signed a distribution deal with Columbia Records for her international activities, expanding her reach beyond YG Entertainment.
