Jennie, born Jennie Kim on January 16, 1996, in Bundang, Seongnam, South Korea, is a South Korean rapper, singer, songwriter, and actress under Odd Atelier and Columbia Records. She is a member of the K-pop girl group BLACKPINK, serving as the main rapper and vocalist.

Early Life

Jennie is an only child. She attended Cheongdam Elementary School in Seoul, South Korea, before moving to New Zealand. At the age of eight, she traveled with her family to Australia and New Zealand. When her mother asked if she liked New Zealand and wanted to stay, Jennie answered “yes.”

A year later, she was sent to study at Waikowhai Intermediate School in Auckland, living with a local homestay family. She shared her experience of learning a new language in the 2006 MBC documentary English, Must Change to Survive.

Career

During her teenage years, Jennie once dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer. After completing intermediate school, she enrolled at ACG Parnell College. Jennie first learned about K-pop while in New Zealand and was particularly drawn to the music of YG Entertainment. When she was 14, her mother planned to move her to Florida, USA, to continue her studies with hopes she would become a lawyer or teacher. However, Jennie disliked the idea and worried about not being able to pursue work she truly enjoyed if she lived alone abroad.

Jennie began training at YG Entertainment in 2010 after passing an audition, later being publicly introduced as a “new trainee” through cover performances and appearances, including G-Dragon’s That XX music video between 2012–2013.

On August 8, 2016, Jennie debuted with BLACKPINK through the single album Square One, which included “Boombayah” and “Whistle,” taking on the roles of rapper and vocalist in the group.

In November 2018, Jennie made her solo debut with the single SOLO, which topped South Korea’s Circle Digital Chart and the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. The music video surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube in 2024, marking a rare milestone for a female K-pop soloist.

The year 2023 marked a wave of solo activities: she released You & Me, which topped the Billboard Global Excl. US chart, and One of the Girls (a collaboration with The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp), which entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and earned RIAA Platinum certification.

In 2023, Jennie founded her creative management label, Odd Atelier, for her solo career. In 2024, she signed a distribution deal with Columbia Records for her international activities, expanding her reach beyond YG Entertainment.

In 2025, Jennie released her first full-length studio album, Ruby, under Odd Atelier and Columbia Records, selling over 1 million copies worldwide and charting strongly in South Korea, the UK, and the U.S. The singles “Mantra” and “Like Jennie” ranked high on the Billboard Global 200 and achieved record-breaking placements for a female K-pop soloist on the UK Singles Chart.

Outside of music, Jennie is a prominent figure in global fashion and advertising. She is a brand ambassador for luxury fashion house Chanel (fronting campaigns such as Coco Crush and attending the Met Gala 2023), collaborates extensively with Calvin Klein, and works with Jacquemus — including closing its 15th anniversary show in Capri, Italy — as well as beauty brands like Hera under Amorepacific.
