Yoo Jeong-yeon (birth name: Yoo Kyung-wan, Korean: 유경완), born on November 1, 1996, is a South Korean singer better known by her stage name Jeongyeon. She is a member of the K-pop girl group TWICE under JYP Entertainment. Within the group, Jeongyeon serves as the lead vocalist.
Early Life
Jeongyeon was born in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, as the youngest of three daughters. Her eldest sister, Yoo Seo-yeon, works outside the entertainment industry, while her second sister, Gong Seung-yeon, is an actress. Their father, Yoo Chang-joon, previously served as a private chef for former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and worked for over 20 years at the Seoul Plaza Hotel.
As a child, Jeongyeon took part in aerobics classes, which sparked her interest in singing and dancing. She faced multiple rejections in auditions before successfully passing the JYP Entertainment audition in 2010. After becoming a trainee, Jeongyeon trained for about five years before debuting with TWICE on October 20, 2015, through the group’s debut mini album The Story Begins, featuring the title track “Like Ooh-Ahh.”
Career
From May to July 2015, she participated in Mnet’s survival program Sixteen, which selected the members of TWICE, and was chosen as one of the group’s nine members.
From July 2016 to January 2017, Jeongyeon co-hosted the SBS music program Inkigayo alongside her sister; the two received the Rookie Award at the 2016 SBS Entertainment Awards. Between 2016 and 2019, she frequently ranked among the top 20 most popular idols in South Korea according to Gallup Korea surveys.
In 2018, she collaborated with her sister on the song “Like a Star” for the OST of My Dream Class. At the end of 2023, she released a cover of “O Christmas Tree” as part of Apple Music’s holiday music series.
From 2020 to early 2022, Jeongyeon experienced two hiatus periods due to health issues, including a herniated disc and anxiety/panic disorder. She underwent surgery prior to TWICE’s release of More & More and went on hiatus in October 2020, returning in early 2021. Her second hiatus began in August 2021, and she made a full return in February 2022, joining the North American leg of TWICE’s 4th world tour, III.
In 2023, Jeongyeon released a solo cover of “O Christmas Tree” as part of Apple Music’s Carols Covered playlist.
In 2024, she co-wrote the song “Bloom” on the album With You-th.
In 2025, Jeongyeon, together with Jihyo and Chaeyoung, released the song “Takedown” for the animated musical film KPop Demon Hunters, which entered the Billboard Hot 100.
Strengths
Vocally, Jeongyeon serves as TWICE’s Lead Vocalist. Her bright, resonant tone and steady sense of timing allow her to handle parts that require clarity and stability, especially in verses and pre-choruses. In songs such as “Cheer Up” and “TT,” she excels at bridging into the climactic sections while maintaining melodic structure during live performances.
In terms of dance, Jeongyeon’s strengths lie in her precise control of movements and steady rhythm. Her years of training at JYP Entertainment enable her to maintain synchronization with the group’s formations, even during high-intensity live stages on international tours.
Beyond singing, Jeongyeon also shows potential in acting. In 2025, she received an offer to appear in the detective film New Recruit: The Movie, which is expected to mark her big-screen acting debut.
