Jin, born Kim Seok-jin on December 4, 1992, is a South Korean singer and songwriter. He is a member of the South Korean boy band BTS, serving as a vocalist and visual. Jin operates under Big Hit Music, a subsidiary of HYBE Labels (formerly Big Hit Entertainment).
Early life
Kim Seok-jin was born on December 4, 1992, in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. His family consists of his parents and an older brother. He belongs to the Gwangsan Kim clan.
In 2007, Kim Seok-jin attended a short-term language course in Australia to study English. He originally intended to become a journalist but decided to pursue acting after watching Kim Nam-gil’s performance in the television series Queen Seondeok. During middle school, Kim Seok-jin was scouted by the entertainment agency SM Entertainment on the street but declined the offer at that time. He graduated from Boseong High School in 2010.
To pursue an acting career, Kim Seok-jin enrolled in Film Studies at Konkuk University and graduated on February 22, 2017. He later enrolled in graduate school at Hanyang Cyber University to pursue studies in fields beyond music.
Career
In 2012, Kim Seok-jin joined Big Hit Entertainment as a trainee. On June 13, 2013, he debuted as a member of BTS with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool.
In 2014, BTS released the album Skool Luv Affair featuring the lead single “Boy In Luv.” Kim Seok-jin participated in group promotions through radio, variety, and reality programming.
In 2015, BTS released two albums in The Most Beautiful Moment in Life series, Part 1 and Part 2. Kim Seok-jin co-wrote and co-produced the tracks “Boyz With Fun” and “Outro: Love Is Not Over.” The single “I Need U” earned BTS their first music program win.
In May 2016, the compilation album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever was released, which won Daesang awards at the 2016 Melon Music Awards and MAMA Awards. In October 2016, Kim Seok-jin released his solo track “Awake” as part of the studio album Wings. The song peaked at number 31 on the Gaon Digital Chart and number six on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. That same year, Kim Seok-jin and V released “It’s Definitely You” for the soundtrack of the television drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. In December, he released a Christmas version of “Awake” on SoundCloud.
In 2017, BTS released the reissue album You Never Walk Alone featuring the single “Spring Day.”
In 2018, Kim Seok-jin performed the solo track “Epiphany” for the album Love Yourself: Answer. He also collaborated with Jungkook on an alternate version of “So Far Away.”
In June 2019, Kim Seok-jin released the solo track “Tonight” on SoundCloud to commemorate the sixth anniversary of BTS.
In 2020, Kim Seok-jin released the solo track “Moon” on the album Map of the Soul: 7. In December, he released “Abyss” on SoundCloud.
In November 2021, he released “Yours,” the main theme for the television series Jirisan. In December, he released the song “Super Tuna,” which reached number four on the Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart.
On October 28, 2022, Kim Seok-jin released his solo single album The Astronaut, co-written with the band Coldplay. The track peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one on iTunes Top Songs in 104 countries and territories. The album sold 700,954 copies on its first day on Hanteo and received a million-seller certification in South Korea. In December 2022, Kim Seok-jin enlisted for mandatory military service. In January 2023, after completing basic training at the 5th Infantry Division, he was appointed as an assistant training instructor at the unit.
Kim Seok-jin was discharged from the military on June 12, 2024. On June 13, he attended the 2024 Festa event at Jamsil Arena in Seoul. On November 15, he released the six-track mini album Happy, featuring the lead single “Running Wild” and the pre-release track “I’ll Be There.”
