Joy (born Park Soo-young on September 3, 1996) is a South Korean singer, actress, and television host. She is a member of the girl group Red Velvet under SM Entertainment, where she holds the positions of lead rapper and vocalist.

Early life

Park Soo-young was born on Jeju Island and raised in Dobong District, Seoul. She is the eldest of three sisters. She attended Seoul School of Performing Arts.

Career

In 2012, Joy participated in the SM Global Audition in Seoul and was selected by SM Entertainment. She underwent approximately two years of training at the company, during which a vocal instructor gave her the stage name Joy.

On July 29, 2014, SM Entertainment introduced Joy as the fourth member of Red Velvet. She officially debuted with the group on August 1, 2014, with the digital single “Happiness.”

In June 2015, Joy appeared on the MBC reality program We Got Married, where she was paired with Yook Sungjae of BTOB. The pair received the Best Couple and New Star awards at the 2015 MBC Entertainment Awards.

In April 2016, Joy released the duet “Young Love” with Yook Sungjae and was credited as a lyricist for the song. The following month, she concluded her appearance on We Got Married. In November, she collaborated with Lim Seul-ong on the song “Always In My Heart,” which reached number one on several domestic music charts and peaked at number ten on the Gaon Digital Chart.

In 2017, Joy made her acting debut as the female lead in the tvN television series The Liar and His Lover, adapted from the manga Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru by Kotomi Aoki. She also performed several original soundtrack songs for the series, including “Yeowooya,” “I’m Okay,” “Your Days,” “Shiny Boy,” “Waiting For You,” and “The Way to Me.” She received the Newcomer Award at the OSEN Cable TV Awards. In July of the same year, she appeared on King of Mask Singer under the alias Bandabi.

In 2018, Joy began her first fixed role as a television host as a co-host of JTBC’s Sugar Man 2, alongside Yoo Jae-suk, You Hee-yeol, and Park Na-rae. She also appeared in the MBC television series Tempted, for which she received multiple award nominations. In July, she became a host of the Lifetime program Pajama Friends with Song Ji-hyo and Jang Yoon-ju. In October, she released the original soundtrack song “Dream Me” with Mark Lee for the series The Ghost Detective.

In January 2019, Joy became the main host of the beauty program Get It Beauty on OnStyle, co-hosting with Jang Yoon-ju. In December, she joined the sports variety show Handsome Tigers as the manager of Seo Jang-hoon’s basketball team.

In March 2020, Joy released the solo original soundtrack “Introduce Me a Good Person” for the television series Hospital Playlist. The song ranked fifth on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100, sixth on the Gaon Digital Chart, surpassed 500 million points on the Gaon Digital Index, and received platinum certification for streaming from the Korea Music Content Association. It was nominated for Song of the Year Daesang and Best OST at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, and Best OST at the 30th Seoul Music Awards. Joy also received nominations at the Melon Music Awards and Genie Music Awards. In May, she featured on the song “Mayday” by R&B singer Crush. In the same year, she received the Best Female Variety Idol Daesang at the Brand Customer Loyalty Awards.

On May 12, 2021, SM Entertainment announced that Joy would release her first special solo album, consisting of six remake tracks from the 1990s and 2000s. The album, titled Hello, was released on May 31. It topped the iTunes Top Albums chart in 26 countries, with all six tracks entering the Gaon Digital Chart. The title track “Hello” reached the top ten of the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100. The album later received a nomination for Album of the Year Daesang at the 2021 Melon Music Awards, and Joy received additional nominations at several domestic award ceremonies. On December 20, she returned to acting in the JTBC television series The One and Only.

In 2022, Joy received nominations for Best Actress Idol Daesang and Best Variety Idol Daesang at the Brand Customer Loyalty Awards. On May 26, KakaoTV announced that she would star in the television series Once Upon a Small Town. The series was released globally on Netflix on September 5 and entered the platform’s Top 10 in 33 countries.

On April 26, 2023, SM Entertainment announced that Joy would temporarily suspend activities for health reasons. She resumed activities two months later. In June, she received nominations at the Blue Dragon Series Awards and released the collaborative single “Blue Night Song” with Ha Dong-kyun.

In 2024, Joy performed the original soundtrack “My Lips Like Warm Coffee” with Big Naughty for The Last 10 Years. On October 3, she held a birthday fan concert.

In January 2025, Joy renewed her contract with SM Entertainment. On July 28, the company announced her first solo EP, From Joy, with Love, with the title track “Love Splash!”. The EP was released on August 18 and consists of six tracks. She held the fan concert Unmelting Our Green in Seoul on October 3. On September 30, SM Entertainment confirmed that Joy would star as Gong Yu Il in the television series One-of-a-Kind Romance, adapted from a webtoon of the same name.

In 2026, Joy began her Asian concert tour titled Joy Splash. On March 15, she performed in Taipei, Taiwan.
