After I.O.I disbanded, Se-jeong continued her career as part of Gugudan and its sub-unit Gugudan SeMiNa. She is now active as a solo artist, building a strong presence in both music and acting, with notable contributions in television dramas and musical theater.
Early Life
Kim Se-jeong was born in Gimje, North Jeolla Province, South Korea, and grew up in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province. Her parents divorced when she was young, and she and her older brother were raised by their mother at their aunt’s home. She reconnected with her father only during her high school years.
During her school days, she took part in various athletic competitions, particularly in track and field, while also showing her artistic side through the drama club. Later, she successfully passed Jellyfish Entertainment’s highly competitive audition, which had a selection ratio of about 1 in 3,000. She went on to study Applied Music at Hanyang Women’s University, laying the foundation for her professional career in the arts.
Career
Kim Se-jeong began her artistic journey in 2012 by competing in the audition program K-Pop Star 2. Although she was given a second chance through a wildcard, her run ended at the final casting round. She later joined Jellyfish Entertainment as a trainee.
In 2016, Se-jeong represented Jellyfish in Mnet’s survival show Produce 101, where she finished in second place and debuted as a member of the project girl group I.O.I in May with their mini album Chrysalis. Just a month later, in June, she made her second debut as a member of Gugudan, releasing their first mini album Act.1 The Little Mermaid.
On November 23, 2016, Se-jeong released her first solo digital single, “Flower Way”, as part of Jellyfish’s Jelly Box project. Written and produced by Zico, the track quickly topped major South Korean digital charts and earned her a music show win on Show Champion.
In January 2017, I.O.I officially disbanded after nearly a year of activities. That July, Se-jeong took on her first leading role in the KBS2 coming-of-age drama School 2017, marking her entry into acting.
On July 10, 2018, she and two other Gugudan members formed the sub-unit Gugudan SeMiNa, releasing the single album SeMiNa. By the end of 2019, she collaborated with Dingo Music on the digital single “Tunnel”.
On March 17, 2020, Se-jeong released her first solo mini album, Plant, which reflected her personal musical identity. In August, she followed up with the digital single “Whale”. On December 31, 2020, Jellyfish Entertainment announced the official disbandment of Gugudan.
On March 29, 2021, Se-jeong returned with her second mini album, I’m. That May, she renewed her contract with Jellyfish Entertainment, confirming her intention to continue pursuing her solo career under the company.
From November 2022 to April 2023, Se-jeong held her first Asia fan meeting tour, 2022 Sejeong’s Sesang Diary, with stops in multiple cities across the region.

On September 4, she released her first full-length studio album, Door, and launched her solo concert tour The 門, which included shows in Seoul, Hong Kong, Manila, Taipei, Tokyo, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Melbourne, and Sydney, though some scheduled stops in Jakarta and Macau were canceled. That same year, she also made her non-musical stage debut in the play Temple, inspired by the life of Temple Grandin. Beyond music and acting, she was named a global ambassador for the French luxury brand Longchamp.
In 2024, Se-jeong became the face of It MICHAA for its Spring campaign. In March, she appeared on the cover of Elle Korea – D Edition, with a special photoshoot in Paris in collaboration with Longchamp.
