Seungmin (born Kim Seung-min on September 22, 2000) is a South Korean singer. He is a member and the main vocalist of the South Korean boy group Stray Kids, formed and managed by JYP Entertainment.
Early life
Seungmin was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, in a family of four, including an older sister. He completed his primary education at Bongeun Elementary School and attended Cheongdam Middle School. Influenced by his grandfather, a pitcher, Seungmin initially pursued baseball and threw the ceremonial first pitch for the professional team SK Wyverns at the age of nine. He later ceased playing due to an injury and transitioned to music during the fourth grade. During middle school, Seungmin won a children’s choir competition and resided in Los Angeles, United States, for several months.
Career
In 2017, Seungmin participated in the survival reality show Stray Kids, produced by JYP Entertainment.
In 2018, Seungmin debuted as a member of Stray Kids. The group held their debut showcase, Stray Kids Unveil (Op. 01: I Am Not), on March 25 at Jangchung Arena and released their debut EP I Am Not with the lead single “District 9” on March 26. Seungmin serves as the main vocalist within the group. Starting July 24, 2018, Seungmin began serving as a fixed MC for the television program After School Club.
In 2019, Seungmin co-hosted the program We K-Pop from July 12 to October 11 alongside Kim Shin-young, Nichkhun, and Inseong.
In 2020, Seungmin released several solo covers through the SKZ-Record project, including “You Were Beautiful” (Day6), “Start Over” (Gaho), and “Stay As You Are” (Sandeul).
In 2021, Seungmin released his first original soundtrack (OST) “Here Always” for the drama Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha on October 10. During the year, he participated in the SKZ-Player project with the tracks “Piece of a Puzzle” (released March 25, with Changbin) and “Up All Night” (released June 18, with Bang Chan, Changbin, and Felix). Seungmin also served as a special DJ for the radio program Day6 Kiss the Radio from October 11 to 15.
In 2022, Seungmin released the OST “Close to You” for Love in Contract on October 19. On December 21, he released the solo track “Stars and Raindrops” as part of the album SKZ-Replay and uploaded a cover of Justin Bieber’s “Ghost” on SKZ-Record.
In 2023, Seungmin released the subunit track “Snain” with Changbin and Felix on March 27, followed by “Hold On” on August 13 via SKZ-Record. He competed in King of Masked Singer under the pseudonym “Ink” in episodes 408 and 409, aired on June 11 and 18, where he performed Younha’s “Event Horizon.”
In 2024, Seungmin released the OST “Phobia” for the webtoon I’m the Queen in This Life on March 15 and “Destiny” for the drama The Midnight Studio on April 9. He released the duet “Respirator” with Han in June via SKZ-Record and the track “As We Are” in the album Hop in December. The same year, Seungmin launched the cover series Song By on the official Stray Kids YouTube channel.
In 2025, Seungmin released the OSTs “My Destiny” for The Potato Lab (March 2), “Start!” (with Lee Know and I.N) for Resident Playbook (April 12), and “It Has to Be You” for Would You Marry Me (October 10). He released the duets “Cinema” with Lee Know in Mixtape: Dominate (March) and “Goodbye” on SKZ-Record (July). The Song By series concluded in June with a cover of “Finale” by eill.
