Suga, born Min Yoon-gi on March 9, 1993, is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is a member of the boy band BTS, serving as a lead rapper.

Early life

Suga was born in Daegu, South Korea, as the younger of two brothers. He attended Taejeon Elementary School, Gwaneum Middle School, and Apgujeong High School. At age 13, Suga began writing lyrics after listening to “Reggae Muffin” by Stony Skunk and music by Epik High. By age 17, he worked at a recording studio in Daegu, where he performed MIDI arranging and sold beats. In 2010, Suga auditioned for Big Hit Entertainment and became a trainee.

Career

In 2010, Suga joined Big Hit Entertainment as a trainee and music producer.

On June 13, 2013, he debuted as a member of BTS on Mnet’s M! Countdown, performing the track “No More Dream” from the debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. Within the group, Suga serves as a rapper and has contributed to the composition and production of numerous tracks across the discography of BTS.

On August 16, 2016, Suga released his debut self-titled mixtape, Agust D, under the solo alias Agust D via SoundCloud. In 2017, he produced the song “Wine” for singer Suran, which was released on April 27 and subsequently won the Hot Trend Award at the 2017 Melon Music Awards.

The mixtape Agust D was officially released to digital purchase and streaming platforms in February 2018, reaching number three on the Billboard World Albums Chart.

In 2019, Suga collaborated with singer Lee So-ra on the track “Song Request,” which won Best Collaboration at the 2019 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

On May 22, 2020, he released his second mixtape, D-2, under the name Agust D. The album peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200, number 7 on the UK Albums Chart, and number 2 on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart. In 2022, Suga participated as a producer and featured artist on PSY’s single “That That.”

On April 21, 2023, Suga released his first solo studio album, D-DAY, featuring the lead single “Haegeum” and the pre-release track “People Pt.2” featuring IU. From April 26 to August 6, 2023, he conducted his first solo world tour, the SUGA | Agust D TOUR, comprising 28 performances across the United States, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, and South Korea. On September 22, 2023, Suga enlisted for mandatory military service as a social service agent.

In 2024, Suga continued his military service in South Korea.

In 2025, Suga completed his military service on June 21; in July, he and the members of BTS announced plans for a comeback with a new album and a world tour scheduled for spring 2026.
