Suzy, whose real name is Bae Su-ji, was born on October 10, 1994. She is a South Korean singer and actress active in the music and film industries. She was a member of the girl group Miss A from 2010 to 2017, where she served as the main vocalist, lead rapper, and maknae (the youngest member). She made her acting debut in 2011 through the television series Dream High and starred in the film Architecture 101 in 2012.

Early life

Suzy was born and raised in Buk District, Gwangju, South Korea. She has two siblings, an older sister and a younger brother. Her father’s name is Bae Wan-young. She attended the Seoul School of Performing Arts and graduated in 2013.

Before her debut, Suzy worked as a model for online shopping websites from the age of 15. In 2009, she auditioned for Mnet’s Superstar K and passed the preliminary round but was eliminated in the later stages. A casting agent from JYP Entertainment noticed her after the show, and she became a trainee. After a period of training, she was introduced to Fei and Jia to form a girl group, with Min later joining. The group Miss A officially debuted in March 2010.

Career

In 2009, Suzy became a trainee at the company after performing a snippet of the song “Love” by Younha. In March 2010, she debuted as a member of the girl group Miss A under JYP Entertainment.

In October 2010, Suzy became an MC for MBC’s Show! Music Core alongside Shinee’s Minho and Onew, and T-ara’s Jiyeon. She hosted the show until October 2011 and later served as an MC for prestigious award ceremonies, including the Seoul Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and Mnet 20’s Choice Awards.

Suzy made her acting debut in 2011 in the KBS teen drama Dream High, for which she also recorded the soundtrack “Winter Child.” Her performance earned her the Best New Actress and Best Couple awards (with Kim Soo-hyun) at the KBS Drama Awards. That same year, she joined the cast of the KBS reality show Invincible Youth 2.

In 2012, Suzy appeared in the film Architecture 101 as the younger version of the female lead. The film was a massive success, drawing over 4.1 million viewers and setting a box office record for Korean melodramas. She also starred in the romantic comedy series Big. For her role in Architecture 101, she won Best New Actress at the 48th Baeksang Arts Awards, and she received the Best Newcomer Award in the variety category at the KBS Entertainment Awards for Invincible Youth 2.

In 2013, Suzy starred in the historical fantasy drama Gu Family Book with Lee Seung-gi, winning the Top Excellence Award at the MBC Drama Awards and Outstanding Actress at the Seoul International Drama Awards.

In 2014, she was cast as Jin Chae-seon, Korea’s first female pansori singer, in the film The Sound of a Flower, released in 2015. She also collaborated with Taiwanese artist Show Lo on the song “Together In Love” for his album Reality Show?.

In January 2016, Suzy released the digital single “Dream,” a collaboration with Exo’s Baekhyun, which topped the Gaon Weekly Digital Chart and won Best Collaboration at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. She also starred in the melodrama Uncontrollably Fond with Kim Woo-bin. In September, her wax figure was unveiled at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, making her the first Korean female artist to be featured there. A second wax figure was later displayed at Madame Tussauds Singapore.

Suzy debuted as a solo singer in January 2017 with the EP Yes? No?. The pre-release single “Pretend” achieved an “all-kill” on major music charts. In February, she released the duet “Don’t Wait for Your Love” with Park Won. Later that year, she starred in the fantasy romance While You Were Sleeping. Following Miss A’s disbandment, she renewed her contract with JYP Entertainment.

In January 2018, she released the single “I’m in Love with Someone Else,” followed by her second EP, Faces of Love, featuring the lead single “Holiday” (ft. DPR Live).

In March 2019, Suzy joined Management SOOP. She starred in the action-spy drama Vagabond and the disaster film Ashfall. In 2020, she appeared in the short film Live Your Strength and the drama Start-Up.

In 2021, she held an online concert, Suzy: A Tempo, to celebrate her 10th anniversary.

In 2022, she released the singles “Satellite” and “Cape,” and starred in the Coupang Play psychological thriller Anna.

In 2023, she performed the theme song “R.U.N” for R U Next? and starred in the Netflix series Doona!. In 2024, she returned to the big screen in Wonderland and participated in the KBS2 busking show Moving Voices.

In 2025, Suzy released the single “Come Back” and a Korean version of “Waiting on a Wish” for Disney’s Snow White soundtrack. She also starred in the Netflix series Genie, Make a Wish and the film Seven O’Clock Breakfast Club for the Brokenhearted, which premiered at the 30th Busan International Film Festival.
