Early Life
Wonyoung is the youngest in a family of two daughters. Her older sister, Jang Da-a, is an actress. Her father works as a music teacher. She attended an international kindergarten and is fluent in Korean and English, with basic knowledge of Japanese. She graduated from Seoul Shinyongsan Elementary School and initially attended Yonggang Middle School.
Career
Jang Wonyoung became a trainee under Starship Entertainment in February 2017 at the age of 12. After 14 months of training, she participated in the survival program Produce 48 from June to August 2018. Ranking first in the final results, she debuted as the center of the project group IZONE in October 2018 with their first mini-album ColorIZ and title track La Vie en Rose.
During her two and a half years with IZ*ONE, Wonyoung achieved success with hits such as La Vie en Rose, Violeta, FIESTA, and Panorama. La Vie en Rose debuted at No. 9 on the Melon Real Time Chart and won six trophies on Korean music shows. The group released their first Japanese single, Suki to Iwasetai, in February 2019.
Following IZ*ONE’s disbandment in April 2021, Wonyoung returned to Starship Entertainment and re-debuted alongside An Yujin in the six-member group IVE on December 1, 2021, with the single Eleven. In IVE, she serves as a vocalist and visual, often positioned at the center. Subsequent hits such as Love Dive, After Like, and I AM propelled IVE to become one of the most successful 4th-generation girl groups.
Wonyoung has contributed Korean lyrics to IVE’s albums I’VE IVE, I’VE MINE, and I’VE SWITCH. She has shown remarkable improvement in live vocal skills, drawing attention for her performance of HEYA in 2024.
From October 2021 to January 2023, Wonyoung co-hosted KBS’s music program Music Bank, first with Park Sung-hoon and later with Lee Chaemin. She became the first MC in the show’s history to have her contract extended. Wonyoung has also hosted the Asia Artist Awards (AAA) from 2021 to 2023, becoming the youngest MC in the award show’s history.
Dubbed the “new generation advertising queen,” Wonyoung has appeared in fashion magazines such as Vogue Korea, Elle Korea, and GQ Korea. She has worked with luxury brands including Dior, Miu Miu, and Laura Mercier. In 2025, she became the brand ambassador for MALTO Vietnam, marking the first time a 4th-generation K-pop idol has collaborated with a Vietnamese F&B brand.
