Shin Yu-na (신유나), stage name Yuna, was born on December 9, 2003, in Suwon, South Korea. She is a singer, rapper, dancer, and model, currently managed by JYP Entertainment. Yuna is the youngest member (maknae) of the girl group ITZY, serving as lead dancer, lead rapper, vocalist, and visual. She also became the first member of the group to launch a personal YouTube channel called “유난히빛이나 YUNA” in January 2025.
Early Life
Yuna is the second child in her family, with an older sister born in 1999. She attended Hanlim Arts School, majoring in practical dance, and graduated in February 2022. Before joining JYP Entertainment, Yuna participated in sports such as floorball at the national level. She was discovered by a JYP representative at a music festival in 2016 and became a trainee with the company.
Career
In 2019, Yuna debuted with ITZY as part of a five-member lineup with “DALLA DALLA” — a debut considered one of the most successful in K-pop history at the time. Notably, just before debut, JYP was forced to reshuffle ITZY’s lineup due to the sudden departure of Jeon Somi — the company’s most high-profile trainee at the time.
In that vacuum, Yuna was pushed to the forefront, quickly becoming both the focus of public expectations and skepticism, as ITZY was still largely seen as “the group missing Somi.” With sharp visuals, ideal body proportions, and strong stage presence, Yuna drew attention from the start — despite lacking any significant individual media exposure beforehand.
Difficulties
Each time ITZY made a comeback — especially in MVs like Not Shy, Mafia In The Morning, or LOCO — Yuna often stood out in crop tops and body-hugging outfits styled to accentuate her figure. These looks regularly stirred debate on forums like TheQoo and Pann, known for dissecting idol imagery. Some criticized the overtly sexy styling as inappropriate for her age and role as the group’s youngest, while others defended it as a reflection of her unique persona.
She has also been at the center of plastic surgery rumors, particularly after backstage photos and fashion shoots revealed noticeable changes in her nose and jawline. JYP has remained silent, which has only fueled before-and-after photo comparisons on Korean forums. Still, Yuna has maintained a sharp visual image and fashion-forward aura, helping her stand out in magazine editorials and brand campaigns.
In 2022, Yuna performed “U-Go-Girl” at the KBS Song Festival — a year-end event typically seen as a routine wrap-up show. However, the stage sparked major backlash after Lee Hyori, the original singer and iconic sex symbol of 2000s K-pop, publicly voiced her surprise and disapproval. Rather than praising it, Hyori expressed concern over how the new generation was portraying a song that once symbolized confident and empowered femininity. Yuna’s version was criticized as a misguided attempt at sexy — stripped of the song’s original spirit. The performance sparked widespread online debate, far beyond what’s typical for a festival stage.
Outside of ITZY’s main activities, Yuna maintains a public presence through fashion behind-the-scenes content, cooking livestreams, and casual updates. She has mentioned calling her parents often and taking care of her pet cat, but some fans see this content as lacking the edge or charisma needed to build a distinct personal brand.
Fashion
Although Yuna often represents ITZY at international events like KCON, fashion campaigns, and overseas interviews, she hasn’t become a regular face in Korean mainstream media. Meanwhile, ITZY as a group has been losing ground domestically to Gen 4 girl groups like NewJeans, IVE, and LE SSERAFIM — groups with viral members and highly curated media strategies.
