Yuqi, born Song Yuqi (宋雨琦), is a Chinese singer, dancer, rapper, producer, and model under Cube Entertainment. She was born on September 23, 1999, in Beijing, China. Yuqi is a member of the K-pop girl group i-dle (formerly (G)I-DLE), serving as the Main Dancer, Sub Vocalist, Sub Rapper, and Face of the Group.

Early life

From a young age, Yuqi displayed outstanding academic ability and was regarded as a “prodigy.” She was admitted to Beijing 101 Middle School, one of the most prestigious schools in Beijing, accepting only the top 5% of students. She studied in Class 1, the highest-ranking among 14 classes organized by academic performance, and once ranked second out of more than 40 students. Beyond academics, she was also the leader of the school’s street dance club and was well-liked by her peers.

Yuqi showed artistic talent early, mastering Chinese folk dance (Dai dance) and playing the traditional instrument guzheng. Although her parents encouraged her to focus on studies, she pursued her passion for K-pop and persuaded her family to let her audition at the Cube Star World Audition in Beijing in 2015 at the age of 16.

Career

In 2015, Yuqi auditioned at the Cube Star World Audition in Beijing and became a trainee under Cube Entertainment. She trained in South Korea for three years before debuting. In June 2017, she appeared in a Rising Star Cosmetics advertisement, marking her first activity in the entertainment industry.

On May 2, 2018, Yuqi debuted with i-dle as Main Dancer, Sub Vocalist, and Sub Rapper in the debut album I Am with the title track Latata. The song earned its first music show win within 20 days, contributing to Cube Entertainment’s 58% revenue growth in 2018.

In 2019, Yuqi expanded into the Chinese market as a fixed cast member of Keep Running Season 7 on Zhejiang TV. She also appeared in variety shows such as The Gashinas and Law of the Jungle in Myanmar, and sang the OST for Please Pay Attention Visitors. In October, i-dle competed on Queendom, finishing in third place and solidifying their status in the 4th generation of K-pop.

In 2020, Yuqi began songwriting with I’m the Trend dedicated to the fandom NEVERLAND. She wrote the Chinese lyrics for Dumdi Dumdi and hosted Learn Way on KakaoTV. She also appeared in I’m a Survivor and G-Star 2020 with Krafton.

In May 2021, Yuqi made her solo debut in China with the single album A Page, featuring the tracks Giant and Bonnie & Clyde. That year, she participated in Stage Boom, Let’s Fall In Love 3, 2060, Shine! Super Brothers, and recorded Salute to the Heroes, the official theme song for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

In 2022, Yuqi returned to Korea with i-dle. She co-composed Polaroid and Liar for the album I Never Die, released in March, which charted in Korea’s Top 2 for 52 consecutive weeks and earned Platinum certification. In October, she co-composed Reset and Dark (X-File) for the EP I Love, which received Triple Platinum certification.

In 2023, Yuqi collaborated internationally with Yena on Hate Rodrigo and with Alan Walker and JVKE on Fire! from Walker’s album Walkerworld. That same year, i-dle topped Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart for the first time.

In January 2024, Yuqi co-composed Doll and Rollie for i-dle’s second full-length album 2, which sold over 1.5 million copies and earned Double Platinum certification. In April, she made her Korean solo debut with the EP YUQ1, featuring the title track Freak and the pre-release single Could It Be.

In 2025, Yuqi continued her solo career with the single Radio (Dum-Dum) released in March. In September, she released the single album Motivation with the title track M.O., a 1990s boom bap-inspired hip-hop song conveying themes of confidence and independence. The album included three songs in English, Korean, and Chinese, targeting a global audience. Yuqi also achieved her first solo music show win on Show Champion.
