GNZ48 is a Chinese idol girl group operating under a theater-based model, established in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. The group is managed by Guangzhou Siba Culture Media Co., Ltd. and serves as a sister group to SNH48 within the SNH48 Group ecosystem.

The formation of GNZ48 was officially announced on April 20, 2016. The GNZ48 Star Dream Theater, located at Zhongtai International Plaza in the Tianhe District of Guangzhou, opened its doors and hosted its inaugural performance on April 29, 2016. The group operates through a multi-team system. During its initial phase, GNZ48 was divided into three primary units: Team G, Team NIII, and Team Z. All members of the group are of Chinese nationality.
Meaning of GNZ48
GNZ48 stands for GuaNgZhou 48. The name is derived from the first three letters of the Pinyin romanization for Guangzhou, combined with the number 48 in accordance with the naming conventions of the SNH48 Group.
The number 48 originates from Japan’s AKB48 model, which is centered around the concept of “idols you can meet.” This model emphasizes regular theater performances and direct interaction events between idols and their fans.
Fandom & Lightstick
GNZ48 does not promote a single unified fandom name for the entire group. Instead, fans typically focus their support on specific members, leading to the formation of numerous sub-fandoms centered around individual idols.
The group released the GNZ48 Official Multi-Color Memorial Light Stick (GNZ48官方多色纪念荧光棒). This lightstick supports various colors to match the official support colors of specific teams or individual members during theater performances.
Influence
GNZ48 operates primarily within the Mainland Chinese market, with its core activities centered in Guangzhou and neighboring cities. The group’s content is distributed across major Chinese online platforms such as Tencent Video, Bilibili, and NetEase.
In 2017, GNZ48 engaged in promotional collaborations with the bike-sharing brand OFO and the electronics corporation Toshiba. That same year, the group released a documentary titled Documentary of GNZ48: 7/48 (July 28, 2017), which chronicled the members’ activities within the theater system. Additionally, two members, Liang Jiao and Liang Qiao, participated in the South Korean reality show Girls Planet 999, broadcast on Mnet in 2021.
Musical Style
GNZ48 utilizes J-pop and C-pop as its musical foundation, inheriting the idol model of the 48 Group system. Their discography spans multiple genres, ranging from dance-pop to ballads. Some tracks have been released in Cantonese versions to cater to the local audience in Guangzhou.
Each team within GNZ48 possesses its own visual identity: Team G uses green, Team NIII uses light yellow, and Team Z uses peach. Theater performances remain the central pillar of the group’s activities, where teams rotate to perform specific setlists in front of a live audience.
