K-pop maintains exceptionally high beauty standards, placing immense pressure on idols. Since approximately 2015, several female idols have publicly acknowledged undergoing plastic surgery. These transformations have been documented by the public through stage performances and media appearances.
Jessi (Jessica Ho)
Jessi is one of the few artists to openly discuss her entire surgical history. In various programs such as Showterview (2020–2023) and both Korean and American talk shows, she confirmed undergoing:
- Double eyelid surgery
- Rhinoplasty (Nose job)
- Breast augmentation
Jessi stated that she underwent these procedures while active in the U.S. and during her early career in South Korea due to appearance-related pressures and industry standards. Her blunt honesty regarding surgery is regarded by Korean media as “rare in K-pop” and has contributed to shifting public perceptions on the topic.
Jung Chaeyeon (DIA, I.O.I)
Chaeyeon confirmed having a nose job after participating in Produce 101 (2016) and debuting with I.O.I. Previously, she had a lower bridge and a rounded nose tip.
From 2017 onwards, Chaeyeon’s profile changed significantly, featuring a higher and slimmer bridge that enhanced her facial symmetry for magazine shoots and cosmetic advertisements. Many Korean news outlets labeled her a “next-generation goddess,” indicating that her surgical results were viewed positively.
Park Bom (2NE1)
Park Bom publicly disclosed having double eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and lip fillers on several programs following 2NE1’s hiatus in 2015.
She explained that the pressure to maintain a “doll-like” image and stand out from other members influenced her decision to undergo these procedures. Her case is frequently cited in the press as a prominent example of the downsides of beauty standards in the K-pop industry.
Minzy (2NE1)
Minzy shared that she suffered from rhinitis and breathing issues, leading her to undergo nose surgery during her time at YG Entertainment. According to Minzy, CEO Yang Hyun Suk also encouraged the procedure to better align her look with the group’s idol image.
Post-surgery, Minzy’s nose appeared higher and more refined, helping her project a more “mature” image that resonated with the public during her solo activities after leaving 2NE1.
JooE (Momoland)
JooE confirmed her rhinoplasty in interviews following Momoland’s breakout success with “Bboom Bboom” (2018). Prior to this, she often faced negative comments regarding her nose and round face.
Following the procedure, Korean media described JooE’s appearance as a “visual upgrade,” which helped her maintain her appeal during the height of Momoland’s popularity.
Soyou (SISTAR)
Soyou went public about her nose surgery after receiving numerous negative comments about her looks during SISTAR’s active years, particularly between 2012 and 2014.
She noted that the pressure of being compared to other members led to a loss of self-confidence, prompting her decision. Afterward, Soyou appeared with a more balanced and sharper look, maintaining a stable career even after SISTAR’s disbandment.
Goo Hara (KARA)
Goo Hara admitted to having double eyelid surgery and other cosmetic procedures to further define her eyes, discussing the topic on television and social media. She clarified that while she had natural double eyelids, she had them enhanced for personal reasons and to feel more confident in front of the camera. She remains one of the few high-profile artists to be so transparent about such procedures.
Miryo (Brown Eyed Girls)
Miryo admitted to having double eyelid surgery during a 2011 appearance on a KBS television program. This direct confession served as an early example of an idol being open about surgical intervention.
Narsha (Brown Eyed Girls)
In an interview on Radio Star, Narsha admitted to undergoing several procedures to make herself “more beautiful and happier.” Rather than relying on rumors, Narsha’s direct confirmation reflected a positive attitude toward plastic surgery as a personal choice to enhance one’s appearance.
UEE (After School)
UEE was remarkably candid about her double eyelid surgery when answering questions on the program Sang Sang Plus. She confirmed the procedure was done to boost her confidence. This direct admission established UEE as an artist who is exceptionally open about her surgical journey.
