Meaning of BIGBANG

The name BIGBANG is derived from the Big Bang theory in cosmology. YG Entertainment chose this name with the intent that the group would create an explosion in the music industry and present an image distinct from contemporary idol groups.

Fandom & lightstick

The BIGBANG fandom is named VIP, an abbreviation for “Very Important People.” This name originated from the group’s second single, BigBang is V.I.P, released on September 28, 2006.

The BIGBANG lightstick is called the Bangbong, designed by G-Dragon in 2007. The Bangbong features a crown shape with a yellow color scheme and is one of the oldest lightsticks in K-pop history. The lotus-shaped crown design of the early versions included five petals, representing the five original members.

The Bangbong versions:

  • V1 and V2: Five-petal yellow lotus crown design; currently considered rare on the secondary market.
  • V3 (2011): White color with a chrome crown-shaped B logo and a transparent reflective strip for dual light effects; uses a 4.5V circuit with six LR44/A76 batteries.
  • V4: Includes an additional black version.

Popularity

BIGBANG has a fan base distributed across various regions, particularly in the United States, Southeast Asia, and Brazil. Facebook interactions for the group frequently originate from Vietnam, the United States, and Mexico.

As of 2016, BIGBANG was the K-pop group with four music videos exceeding 100 million views on YouTube. On September 15, 2025, the “Bang Bang Bang” music video surpassed 800 million views on YouTube.

Musical style

BIGBANG debuted with a foundation in hip-hop combined with R&B, later transitioning toward electronic hip-hop starting with the album Always (2007), and expanding into dance-pop and pop ballads in subsequent stages. The members compose and participate in music production at a higher level than most K-pop idols of the same era, with G-Dragon serving as the primary songwriter.

Each member also utilizes a distinct style in solo activities: Taeyang focuses on R&B, Daesung experiments with trot (a traditional Korean music genre), and G-Dragon integrates hip-hop, dance, and R&B. BIGBANG is recognized as one of the acts that advanced the hip-hop concept style in later generations of K-pop.
