Meaning of the Name

The name “NewJeans” carries a dual meaning explained by ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin.

First, jeans are a timeless fashion item, with each generation expressing its own denim style. NewJeans aims to be a cultural icon representing the current generation of pop culture.

Second, “NewJeans” plays on the phrase “new genes,” symbolizing the group’s intention to usher in a new era of youth music.

Fandom & Lightstick

NewJeans’ fandom is called “Bunnies” in English and “Tokki” (토끼) in Korean, both meaning “rabbit.” The fandom name was announced on October 29, 2022, marking the 100th day since their debut.

Their official lightstick, named “Binky Bong,” features white rabbit ears representing the Bunnies. When turned upside down, it forms the letter “N” for NewJeans. Binky Bong was first revealed on October 29, 2022, and officially released in March 2023 through Weverse Shop.

Popularity

NewJeans achieved global recognition with remarkable success across Asia, Europe, and North America, attracting Gen Z and millennial audiences through a nostalgic Y2K style. On Spotify, they became the fastest artist to reach 1 billion streams in just 219 days after debut and the quickest Korean act to surpass 3 billion streams by March 2023.

In 2023, they recorded 609 million YouTube streams in South Korea, breaking BTS’s 2021 record. They are the most-followed fourth-generation girl group on Melon and accumulated 2.9 billion Spotify streams that same year. In Japan, NewJeans generated 2.09 billion yen in revenue in 2024, surpassing aespa.

They were the first K-pop girl group to perform at Lollapalooza in 2023 and had five songs enter the Billboard Hot 100 within a single year. Their Calvin Klein campaign generated an estimated 3.1 million USD in media value in September 2024.

Awards

In 2023, NewJeans won Artist of the Year at both the MAMA Awards and Melon Music Awards, becoming the first female act to achieve this distinction. They also earned Top Global K-Pop Artist at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards.

At the 2023 Golden Disc Awards, they received Rookie of the Year and the TikTok Most Popular Artist Award. In 2024, they won Digital Song Division Bonsang for “Ditto” and “Get Up.”

“Ditto” set a record with 655 Perfect All-Kills, and NewJeans held the No. 1 position on the Circle Digital Chart for a total of 19 weeks in 2023—more than all other artists combined. They accumulated 4.1 billion points on the Circle Digital Chart that year, surpassing the previous girl group record of 2.8 billion set by TWICE.

Style

NewJeans embraces a “girl next door” concept blended with 1990s–2000s-inspired pop, R&B, and dance music. Their songs feature approachable melodies and avoid the complex EDM elements common in modern K-pop.

Their visual aesthetic leans into Y2K fashion with casual outfits, natural makeup, and school-themed concepts. Music videos like “Ditto” and “OMG” use phone-camera style filming and simple storytelling, contrasting with the high-production trends of other fourth-generation groups.

NewJeans has sparked a “less is more” movement in K-pop with minimalistic choreography, catchy vocal lines, and a relatable visual identity, setting themselves apart from peers like aespa and ITZY and redefining the current K-pop sound and image.
