Asa (Enami Asa) is a Japanese rapper born in 2006, currently active in South Korea as a member of the girl group BABYMONSTER under YG Entertainment. She serves as the main rapper of the group.

Early life

Asa was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. Her family consists of her parents and a younger sister. Her father is a veteran Kabuki stage actor, while her mother was a traditional dance instructor. Growing up in an artistic household provided early exposure to the performing arts from a young age.

Career

Asa joined YG Entertainment in 2018 at the age of 12 after passing an audition held in Japan. Her trainee period lasted five years.

In 2023, Asa was officially introduced as a member of BABYMONSTER through the project “Last Evaluation,” an internal evaluation program broadcast on YG Entertainment’s YouTube channel. There, Asa gained attention for her solo rap performance of “RINGA LINGA” by Taeyang of BIGBANG.

On April 1, 2024, Asa officially debuted with BABYMONSTER through the single ‘SHEESH.’ She performed the opening rap and the bridge section, receiving positive feedback online. Subsequently, she appeared on promotional stages for music programs including Inkigayo and Music Bank.

Skills

Asa holds the position of main rapper in BABYMONSTER. In the song “Batter Up” (2023), she performed the opening verse featuring high-speed “fast rap.” This section was arranged at a tempo of 150 BPM, requiring precise rhythmic control over dense lyrical structures with minimal breathing intervals.

Beyond rapping, Asa participates in writing and arranging rap verses for the group’s cover performances. During the “BABYMONSTER THE FIRST STAGE” concert held in Tokyo in June 2024, she rearranged the rap portions of “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” by BLACKPINK into a Japanese version, which was well-received by the local audience.

She is fluent in Japanese, Korean, and English. Additionally,She has also received classical vocal training, providing an advantage in supporting vocal sections.

Trivia

Prior to her debut, Asa faced criticism regarding her vocal abilities when a practice clip from an internal evaluation leaked on social media in May 2023. The footage showed her having difficulty maintaining pitch while singing live. Following this, the official BABYMONSTER YouTube channel uploaded a series of vocal training videos featuring her throughout June and July 2023.

She also faced pressure as one of the two Japanese members of the group, as some Korean netizens expressed skepticism regarding her cultural adaptation. These concerns subsided after she performed a full Korean rap verse during the BABYMONSTER stage at KCON Japan 2024.

Fashion

Asa’s fashion style combines Japanese streetwear with signature YG oversized designs. Her daily outfits often consist of graphic T-shirts, wide-leg cargo pants, and low-top sneakers, reflecting a streetwear-inspired aesthetic.

For the Summer 2025 fashion campaign, Asa and Ruka became the faces of the Japanese brand WEGO. The promotional pictorial focused on “Grunge Style” and “Street Style” themes, featuring denim designs, bomber jackets, and statement accessories from the Summer 2025 Collection.

Furthermore, Asa appeared in the “New Girl, Girl Edition” of DAZED Korea, collaborating with Dior for the Fall–Winter 2024–2025 season. Stylists selected minimalist outfits in cool tones, emphasizing a youthful, layered, and strong personality.
